Filled With God's Spirit?
Did you know that God puts His desires in your mind and heart? And that He works in you to move you forward into what He wants and has planned for you to do? Phil.2:13 is one of my favorite verses because it assures me that every desire I have for pleasing God or serving Him is actually His Spirit causing me to feel and long for this. When He fills me, I want what He wants!Sometimes we get confused about what it means to be filled with the Spirit--is it a feeling, an ecstatic experience, only expressed by speaking in tongues? I appreciate the simple and practical description Jennifer Kennedy Dean gives in her book, The Praying Life. She states, "to be filled with the Spirit means to have your soul and your body--your thinking, feeling, willing, and acting, under the authority of His indwelling Spirit."In writing about prayer, Jennifer describes what happens when we are filled with God's Spirit rather than our own agenda: "His desires pour into our hearts so that they become our desires and are expressed through our words--that is the goal of the praying life. He promises to pour out His heart and to make His thoughts known to us (Proverbs 1:23)."As you think about what it means to be filled with the Spirit, here's a couple of questions to ponder:How is the Spirit's filling seen in your life as a spouse, parent, employee, believer? How do your desires and prayers reflect God at work in you?
