What is Spiritual Formation?
Is it weird?Only for super-serious saints?A bit too mystical for you?Well, guess what! It is not something that belongs to people who lived in past ages or who walk around with a shining halo on their heads! It is for you—and me—the non-super-saints who love Jesus and want to spiritually grow and thrive! Here’s a simple description of what Spiritual formation is:
A multi-faceted process where we intentionally open ourselves up to God’s presence on a regular basis and in a variety of ways. The result is experiencing God on a deeper level as we practice various classic disciplines as well as other Scriptural and spiritually healthy activities. (For tips and tools on opening yourself to God, watch for coming posts)
A life-long inner work promised by God. “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.” Philippians 1:6
A means of inward transformation that requires our cooperation with God’s Spirit who works within us.“It is God who works in you both to will and to act according to His good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
“Becoming the person God had in mind when he originally designed me.” (John Ortberg)
It is God’s will that we be conformed to the likeness of His Son. But: this doesn’t happen without our saying “yes” to His call to walk intentionally with Him and to abide in Him.
Check out the following brief selection of verses about God’s intention that we become formed by His Spirit into the likeness of His Son, Jesus Christ.
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” 1 Samuel 3:9
“Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness.” 1 Timothy 4:7
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy.” Hebrews 12:14
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2“I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you.” Galatians 4:19
“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18
Which statement is the Spirit whispering to you? What one step might you make today in response?
Blessings,
